Lewes library debuts tools to include all children

April 28, 2024

During Autism Acceptance month in April, the Lewes Public Library added new tools to its children’s room to support young patrons with sensory and communication needs.

Children’s Librarian Jennifer Noonan was recently approached by a parent with suggestions for tools that would make library visits more accessible for their child. Noonan, eager to support these ideas, partnered with experts from Child Inspired Therapeutic Services to develop sensory kits and communication boards for young visitors to utilize while in the library.

A large communication board now hangs in the children’s room; it will assist young children and those with limited verbal communication skills to express their wants and needs. Sensory kits are also available on a walk-in basis in the children’s room for all to access. Inside each kit is an individual-size communication board plus a pair of noise-canceling headphones and a weighted lap pad.

“Weighted lap pads provide calming sensory input for children who may feel overwhelmed during community outings or might benefit from a sensory strategy while sitting for story time,” said Christina Connors, director of  clinical services at Child Inspired. “The children's library is often bustling with little ones, so noise-canceling headphones are also available to reduce auditory stimuli for individuals who are sensitive or distracted by environmental noises.”

The library also hosted an autism acceptance story time featuring books celebrating children with special needs and highlighting strategies for inclusion.

“Our No. 1 priority at the library is being a welcoming environment for all, and ensuring everyone is able to participate and enjoy their time here,” said Noonan. “We were thrilled to work with parents and Child Inspired on true community collaboration to bring in these new items, which will allow more children to join us and explore the wonders of the library.”
